It’s December 1946, and one year since Britain won the war. So the Malory siblings want to know why every day still feels like a battle.
Eldest son Jonathan is treading water, flustered by his headstrong siblings and making a meagre living as a classifieds writer. Home from the front, middle child Noel is pursuing his dream of becoming an actor, but he struggles to adjust to civilian life. And fifteen-year-old Robin is determined to let nobody hold her back, even if that means getting kicked out of every boarding school in the British Isles.
But their lives are irrevocably changed when Noel is offered a role in a Christmas broadcast, alongside Hollywood’s sweetheart, Linda Howes. And when Jonathan’s boss gets wind of it, he sends his top columnist Carey Devereux to find out what a movie star is doing performing for pennies on national radio.
